The Linguistics Option
For the Master of Arts Degree in Anthropology
The general option is designed for students who wish to pursue studies of
linguistics, languages, or linguistic analysis. The focus is on the Salishian
languages and on English as a second language.
The Linguistics Option is primarily oriented toward academic research and most
students conduct original research that results in an thesis that is used to
satisfy the MA degree requirements. Classes are chosen with advice from a faculty
advisor to best fulfull the student's goals.
Students who satisfactorily complete the following core requirements
will earn the Master of Arts degree in Anthropology with the Linguistics option.
- Anthropology 500, 570, and 6 credits in additional Anthropology graduate seminars.
- A total 1 to 10 credits in ANTH 597 and/or 599, consistent with
graduate school requirements (6 credits recommended).
- ANTH 470, 473; LING 471, 472, 474, and 475, if not taken as an undergraduate.
- A midprogram assessment.
- One of the following combinations of credit and creative work. The
creative work must be successfully presented and defended in an oral
examination as required by Graduate School policy. Only 6 credits of
300 level UG classes may be taken without special approval.
- A total of 30 credits and a research thesis.
- A total of 36 credits, including 3 additional credits in graduate seminars or
Cooperative Education Experience, and a professional paper.
A professional paper consists of a project, report, portfolio,
exhibit, or similar scholarly contribution; or a scholarly work
published in a refereed journal or other reviewed forum.
