Javier Yoacham in the field in Bhutan

In the summer of 2003 I conducted a pilot project in Jigme Dorji National Park in Bhutan, looking at the preservation of traditional life-ways among people living in a biological reserve. Bhutan is a Buddhist nation nestled in the Himalayas between China and India, and it boasts some of the world's most beautiful landscapes and ancient religious practices, both of which are carefully conserved by the government through a variety of mechanisms.   Currently I am writing my MA thesis, looking at the impact of National Park designations on the lifeways of villagers within Park borders.

Bhutan's example has the potential to educate the world on how nature and humans can harmoniously coexist. I hope to return to Bhutan in the future for PhD level research.
