My project focuses on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Uganda, and how traditional healers and both government and private sectors in Uganda are working together on the following: a) early detection of infection, b) educating the public, c) developing better methods to assist those with opportunistic infections resulting from HIV infection, and d) assisting individuals who cannot travel to the larger cities for treatment. I conducted a pilot study in Uganda in the summer of 2003, when I spent time studying the methods and practices of traditional healers in and around Kampala. My MA thesis is based on this work and extensive library-based research. I am currently planning my return to Uganda for PhD level research, based at the University of Montana |
