Allison Fissel at a gathering of traditional healers in Uganda

In summer 2002 I conducted fieldwork for my MA thesis in Uganda. From this work, I am co-writing a paper with Professor Haddix McKay, entitled "Bridging the Gap: Understanding the dichotomous and collaborative relationships between traditional and allopathic healers in an around Kampala, Uganda". I presented this paper at the annual meeting for the American Anthropological Association in Chicago in November 2003.

My focus is on roles played by traditional healers, and the way that they perceive the dichotomy between 'traditional' and allopathic healing practices in Uganda. Traditionally in Uganda, this relationship has not been collaborative -- rather, the two approaches have tended to be juxtaposed. Recently, however, efforts have been made by both the traditional and allopathic healers to bridge this gap. This paper and my thesis present case studies of individuals and NGOs focused on the potential collaboration between the two types of healers, particularly in the context of HIV/AIDS in Uganda.
